Description

Product Description

A professional-grade, non-invasive split-core current transformer (CT) designed for safe, real-time AC current monitoring without requiring any physical cutting or splicing of high-voltage lines. Ideal for energy management, smart-grid monitoring, and load diagnostics in Arduino and ESP32 projects, the SCT-013-000 accurately steps down high-current loads up to 100A to a manageable 50mA secondary current output. Its split-core design features a spring-loaded snap-shut mechanism, allowing you to easily clip the sensor directly around a single live conductor for instant installation. This sensor is an essential diagnostic tool for calculating total power consumption, identifying energy-draining appliances, and building secure whole-house electrical monitoring systems.

Connection & Interface

The sensor is designed for simple, direct integration into your signal conditioning circuits:

    • Output Leads: Features two output wires (Internal secondary coil).

    • Interface Method: As this is a current transformer, it outputs an AC current signal proportional to the primary load.

    • Crucial Setup: To read this with a microcontroller, you must build a “burden resistor” circuit. Connect a burden resistor (e.g., $33\ \Omega$ to $62\ \Omega$) across the output leads to convert the current signal into a safe AC voltage, and use a voltage divider (DC bias) to center the signal at $VCC/2$ so your ADC can read the full AC waveform.

Applications

  • Smart Home Energy Monitoring: Perfect for tracking whole-house power usage, individual circuit draw, or identifying appliance performance degradation over time.

  • Industrial Load Diagnostics: Excellent for monitoring large AC motor draws, pump activity, or heavy-duty machinery power usage to detect stalls or maintenance needs.

  • Solar/Renewable Energy Projects: Ideal for balancing energy production versus consumption by monitoring inflow/outflow from grid-tied systems.

Compatibility

The SCT-013-000 works with standard ADC platforms provided the signal is conditioned:

  • Arduino Board Series (Uno, Nano, Mega) using a standard burden resistor and DC bias conditioning circuit.

  • ESP32 and ESP8266 boards (Compatible, though conditioning is vital to ensure the AC signal remains within the 0V-3.3V ADC range).

  • Energy Metering ICs (e.g., ADE7753, HLW8012) for highly accurate, dedicated power measurement.
