Product Description
The LM555 Precision Timer IC is the industry-standard, highly stable controller capable of producing accurate time delays or oscillation. In time-delay (monostable) mode, the timed interval is controlled by a single external resistor and capacitor network. In astable (free-running) mode, the frequency and duty cycle are accurately controlled with two external resistors and one capacitor.
The circuit features internal threshold and trigger levels set at two-thirds and one-third of VCC, respectively. When the trigger input falls below one-third VCC, the internal flip-flop sets and the output goes HIGH. When threshold input rises above two-thirds VCC, the flip-flop resets and the output goes LOW. The high-current output structure can sink or source up to 200 mA, making it capable of directly driving relays, indicator LEDs, buzzers, or logic gates without external transistor amplification. Housed in a standard 8-pin DIP package, it is a foundational integrated circuit for timing, pulse generation, and frequency control applications.
⚠️ Circuit Design Tip: To ensure rock-solid frequency stability and prevent false triggering caused by supply line noise, always connect a 0.01 µF (10 nF) ceramic capacitor from Pin 5 (Control Voltage) to Ground (GND). Additionally, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor across Pin 8 (VCC) and Pin 1 (GND) as close to the IC pins as possible.
